An EEG in pictures

For those who have never been though a 24 hour EEG with a young child, it's impossible to even properly describe. Picture your worst nightmare, make it last 24 hours (or one week like our last EEG) and throw in a very cranky toddler.

The only things that have been more stressful are the seizures themselves and the lack of anything working to treat them.

I didn't take any pictures of hooking him up because it took both me and Jonathan holding him down to get it done. It sucks. I HATE the process almost as much as I hate seizures. When we do the 20 min one in the doctors office it is less stressful. The tech's over there are much calmer and more experienced plus they don't have to cement them to his head. The whole process just sucks and according to the tech's it will until he 4 or 5. God help us.

The only up-side of this EEG, and the reason I was able to take pictures, is because we actually got sent home with the monitor on! YAY! We got to be at home, out in the world, and most importantly, out of a tiny hospital room tethered to the wall.

When we left the hospital we headed to the mall because it was cold and wet outside. We rode the carousel a few times, and the train that runs in the mall. Jack LOVES the carousel, has a frequent rider card, and has been known to cry when we make him get off. He had a good time walking around and it wasn't to obvious that anything was going on. Either that or people were too scared to say anything.

When he was ready for a nap we headed to the car. The doctor actually wanted us to let him nap in the car so that we could get a seizure on the EEG. The problem was that the car wouldn't start. Long story short, the battery was dead and my mom's boyfriend, Ron, came and rescued me and Jack while Jonathan dealt with Sears and the battery. I suppose it would have been worse had Jack and I been on our own and I had no food for him, EEK! But it was sucky timing. I dropped Ron back off at his house and drove Jack around in his car. He had 1 seizure for sure and another episode that I suspect was a seizure.

That evening my mom came over to hang out with the little man. She also brought us dinner and wine! And our friend Rita came over too.

This is what his head looks like all bandaged up. The EEG leads are glued (AKA cemented) to his head and then wrapped. He pulled at it for a little while but eventually left it alone.

Then he had to wear the backpack, which he did really well. He has an ace bandage on his head here because at 3 AM we had to wake him up to re-wrap his head because everything but the leads came off. He didn't go back down until 5:30. Just add EEG tech to my list of mom duties. That's one that they didn't teach me in college.

I love this hat! And it was the best thing to put over everything they tape to his head. Dr. Kane ran into us one of the times we were at the hospital and he really liked it too :-)

And this is the way we all felt about the whole thing.

He did get bundled up to go on a car ride. And this hat and gloves set just cracks me up.

That night I had a pallet on the floor of his room. I "slept" with my glasses on and the monitor right in front of me so that every time he moved I could check and make sure he wasn't tangled, or pulling on his head, or having a seizure. I got maybe 3 hours of very interrupted sleep. Thankfully Jonathan took over early in the morning and let me sleep another 1.5 hours.

And he did a lot more car riding around the house too. You can kind of see the leads that are glued to his head in this picture.

24 hours later it was back to the hospital to get un-hooked. It's much easier and quicker than the hooking up process. Part of what sucks is waiting for 45 min each time, even though we're there on time. And as soon as he saw the tech again, he turned the other way and tried to get away. Thankfully he didn't fuss when we picked him up and took him, but I was concerned at his reaction.

We got back to the room and the tech took the box out and said, "I've never seen this code before on the screen. I'm not sure if it recorded." I stopped breathing. I was going to have a breakdown if it didn't record. She called another tech and found out that one of the batteries came lose, but that's why they put in 2 new batteries when they hook them up. Thankfully it did record and everything was fine. But Oh My God, don't do that to us.

This is what his head looks like under all of the bandages. I think there are 27 leads. Each one has to be measured, marked, and the cemented to his head so you can see why it takes a while. Then they all have to be tested to make sure they work.

The they just bathe his head is acatone mixed with baby oil and give him a scalp massage to get them off. And after he gave the tech a big hug, said thank you, and blew her kisses. He is the sweetest child ever.

As for the results, we won't know anything until Thursday when we see the neurologist. I know that he had 1 seizure. He also had what I've been wondering about while he slept in his crib, so I'm really glad that they'll be able to tell me if it is a seizure. He did not have one of the new seizures that he's been having and I'm just now beginning to wonder if he's having yet another kind a seizure. So he's now had infantile spasms, partial seizures, what I think are tonic seizures (or maybe tonic clonic, I'm not sure which) and now possibly complex partial seizures and/or myoclonic drops. That is far too many seizures for a child who's not even 2.

I'm not sure what's going to happen at the appointment. I suspect we may be sent to Houston for a scan thus sending us back down the surgery road. But I also think that his meds need to be reduced and maybe the diet tweaked a bit.

I'm not sure what is best for Jack at this point, but I do know that we have to do what we can to get the seizures to stop. I rarely have pity parties for us because I know that it's not going to help. And we really are the lucky ones. Jack is still the child who everyone looks at and thinks that he's completely normal, I'm just worried that if we don't get these seizures to stop, he won't remain that child. And while I do not pity him in any way, I still worry for him.

More pictures

Here are a few more from my mom's house, in no particular order.

It's so cute, Shawn & Kelly (my brother and sister-in-law) have taught Grace where her organs are so Shawn would ask her to listen to her intestines and she would put it on her tummy. She would put it on her esophagus, kidneys, heart, and a few others.

Both Grace and Jack were highly entertained by the train.

Christmas!

I love Christmas. I especially love Christmas when I get all of my shopping done early and I can actually enjoy the holiday season. This year I managed to not go to the mall between Thanksgiving and Christmas. I actually got most of my shopping done early and what I didn't, I ordered on line.

But did I mention the tree fiasco? The dead tree fiasco? Yeah, the first tree we got died. Like really dead. Luckily I managed to get it replaced at no cost without a recipe, but it was a lot of work... twice.

Jack met Santa at my grandmother's soon-to-be retirement home. And the nice part was it was free and included lunch. Did you know they want $25 for a picture with Santa at the mall? That seems nuts.

And Jack was fine with Santa, he actually really liked the beard. But I think the Elf freaked him out a little bit.

Christmas morning was great. Jack slept until almost 7 and then we all got up and found what Santa left.

Then the family came over and it was the Jack and Grace show. We had brunch, mimosas and bloody Mary's, and you know - brunch food. Jack did okay with opening presents, okay for a baby that is. Grace of course had a blast. And I must admit that I'm a little overwhelmed by all the toys and where to put them.

I am super excited that Jack got swimming lessons. They last for 20 weeks and will take us right into summer.

And I got a new camera lens! I go pick it up tomorrow but it will allow me to take good inside pictures in low light. I can't wait.

This year Christmas was all about Jack, which means that this year it was all about the baby love and that's the best.

4 month snap shots

I know I haven't posted recently, I've been very tired. My perfectly sleeping child has started rolling over in the middle of the night and getting very upset about it.

Anyways, here are a few recent pictures...

I think this one is my favorite!

And here is a video of my little guy trying to be mobile

The long awaited vacation post

Overall the vacation to Corpus Christi was great. My biggest concern was the car ride. We got him a new car seat so he could sit a bit more upright. We also put a fan back there, a few toys, and I rode in the back. It was a pain, but it worked. Jack had this look on his face most of the time.

The hotel was wonderful (Thanks Dad!) and I loved the light in the room so I took a ton of pictures.

We didn't do a ton because we didn't want overwhelm Jack. We did make a trip to the aquarium! We saw the bird show...

And the dolphin show

And looked at all the fish.

Jack really liked looking at the tanks. He slept through everything else.

We told him this was a real turtle, but you can tell by the look on his face that he didn't buy it.

We of course couldn't take a trip to Corpus Christi without going to the beach.

We didn't stay for long because it was very hot and we didn't want him out in the sun too much. But we did get a video of his first dip in the ocean.

Later that day we went for a dip in the pool at the hotel. It was a small inside pool and was just right. Jack loves swimming.

We also at a ton of sea food and did a lot of walking around town. Jack slept really great the whole time and did really well overall. I think he likes vacation.

The car ride home didn't go quite as well. He did okay but we stopped in San Antonio for a while and it ended up taking us 8 hours to get home so there was a lot more crying.

(Originally posted June 15th, 2009)

Here are some pictures that I've taken. My intention was to edit them and wright about them and then post them, but that isn't happening and I want to share them so here they are...

Vacation here we come

(originally posted Sunday June, 13th)

On Wednesday we're leaving town for a few days. We're going down to the coast, about 4.5 hours away, for 3 nights. Jack is sleeping really well so I think we'll be fine there but I'm really worried about the car ride.

On Saturday we made an attempt to take Jack to the farm but didn't make it. He was screaming bloody murder. We pulled over and I took him out and got him calm but as soon as we got back in the car he started right back up. He was beat red and was screaming so hard he wasn't breathing. I was in the back seat and he was just looking at me like "why won't you pick me up", it was awful. I was crying too at one point.

I ordered a new car seat. It's the next size up but holds little ones too. I have my doubts about it working but it's worth a try. I'm also going to call the doctor tomorrow and see if there is anything we can give him because I think he gets car sick. He was spitting up a bit after we got home on Saturday. I also made a play list in itunes that we keep playing during the day and we'll take it with us in the car. I'm not sure what else to do, accept possibly buy ear plugs.

We are looking forward to being at the beach though. I'm really excited that we're going during the week when the crowds will be less. We plan on going to the aquarium, the museum, and the beach.

My dad is super great and he is using some of his points for our hotel! It even has an inside pool so Jack might like it. I tried to take him swimming a few weeks ago and as soon as I dipped his toes in he went postal so this is how he spent his pool time:

Hopefully this time will go a little better.

I have a feeling that we'll be spending most of our evenings in the hotel so I might even have time to blog a bit.

I'm hoping that Jack learns to behave better than daddy does during picture time.

Jack has the pouting thing down. I know I shouldn't laugh at him when he does it but it's just so dang cute.

2 months old

(Originally posted June 1st, 2009)

Dear Jack,

We've had a lot going on this month. One of the best things is spending so much time with dad. He got told to leave his job a month ago and as horrible as the timing is, it's also turned out to be really great. He now knows what everyday life with a little baby is like and the two of you are becoming great palls. It also means that I have some help and can usually get a little extra sleep in the mornings.

And speaking of sleep you are a little champ. Last night you went 8 hours between feedings. I kept waking up and listening for you. You've been consistently sleeping 5 to 6 hour stretches and I'm hoping last night was a preview of what's to come. Also what's really great is that when you're sleepy we can wrap you up, give you your passy, and lay you down. You do the rest from there. Sometimes we have to go in and put the passy back in but for the most part you put yourself to sleep. The thing that's so great about it is that we won't have to just put you in there to cry at any point. Because you know how to put yourself to sleep, when you wake in the night and don't need food you simply go back to sleep on your own. I love my cuddle time with you and holding a sleeping baby is the best, however it's not worth putting all of us through some stressful nights. You're very advanced.

But don't get me wrong, you have us wrapped around your little finger. You have started smiling and cooing which just melts my heart. You'll sit and cary on a whole conversation. We have no idea what you're talking about but I could sit and talk to you all day. And we're not the only ones in love with you, Baxter has become quite attached to you too. He cries whenever you cry, which is really annoying actually, but he's gotten better at going outside if you're upset. He sticks close to you but is very gentle. Lola will come and sniff your head too but she doesn't follow you around like Baxter does.

Personally, I think you're growing up too fast already. You are an easy baby and I want you to stay just the way you are.

Love,
Mama
